Hospice is sad, but it's also a blessing. That's the message from Teresa Snider and Jackie Burklow, from Interim Health Care Hospice, who told us of the satisfaction they get from serving families dealing with the end of a loved one's life. Jackie's aim is to "preserve people's dignity" as they face the end of their life on Earth. Jackie was trained as an ICU nurse before moving over to Interim to help build its hospice program. She's been working in hospice care for 13 years. Families require tender loving care during these difficult times. Thanks belong to both Teresa and Jackie for all they do to ease our fellow travelers' pain.

Ron Brigman came "home" this week to Amarillo, along with his wife, Carol. They were our Hold Up "victims" nabbed at the Texas Travel Info Center as they are traveling east toward Arkansas. How is it that Ron has come "home"? He was stationed at the Amarillo Air Force Base in 1961 while serving his country in the Air Force, from which he retired after 28 years as an aircraft mechanic. Ron and Carol now call Merced, Calif., home. Carol is a retired deputy Merced city clerk. Thanks belong to Larry Castor, for persuading the Brigmans to spend an evening -- on the Rotary Club of Amarillo. And thanks go also to Shara Hinchey and her sister, Averie Hinchey, for being great hosts. Shara and Averie took the Brigmans to dinner and then to the play "Texas," which was rained out at intermission. But, hey, the lightning was spectacular. And thanks again to APD Sgt. Brent Barbee for serving as the "arresting officer," even though Larry was able to apprehend the visitors before Brent could offer to use his handcuffs on them.

Bill Summerhill gave us his mini-classification talk, telling us of his job running Ascension Academy. Bill also offered a word of praise and thanks to Amarillo and the Panhandle for being so welcoming. Thanks, Bill, and welcome once again to the Rotary Club of Amarillo. We're glad you're with us.

We have a new member proposal. Let's welcome Michael Callahan, the new head of the Harrington Regional Medical Center, who is being proposed by J.B. Lane. Michael, who's served before in Rotary, will join the club under the classification of -- what else? -- Harrington Regional Medical Center. Welcome, Michael.

Denise Blanchard surely puts "Service Above Self," as her honor by the Kids, Inc. demonstrates. Denise has been honored as Kids Inc. Volunteer of the Month for May. Kids Inc. honored her for her dedication and commitment to the area's children. Good job, Denise. Congratulations!

Thanks go to:

Doyle Moore, song leader.

Renee Wilson, pianist.

Todd Weddington, June program chair

Bart Boxwell, invocation.

Abby Estes, introducing guests and visiting Rotarians.

Dale Bippus and Gary Mitchell, greeters.

Don Mullins, selling tickets.

And congratulations again go to Club President Jake Richards as he begins his exciting new Rotary year.
